AUSTIN – The Texas Public Policy Foundation’s Center for Education Policy will hold a policy primer, “Celebrating Milton Friedman’s Legacy: The State of School Choice in Texas,” on Wednesday, July 31, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Capitol Grill inside the Texas State Capitol.
During the 83rd Texas Legislature, Texas took meaningful steps in improving public school choice — but it still has a long way to go. By elevating the cap on Texas’ open enrollment charter schools and improving provider-flexibility for digital and online content, the legislature provided Texas students with many more education options. Unfortunately, all private school choice legislation, including tax credits, education scholarships, and scholarships for special needs students failed to pass into law. Texas continues to trail behind many other states in this sphere, and it is the most vulnerable segments of our population, including low-income families and families with special-needs children, that suffer the most.
