Opt-in Option the way to Fulfill Obamacare Repeal Promise

AUSTIN – Today, The Texas Public Policy Foundation released a paper on repealing Obamacare by Drew White, senior federal policy analyst with the Center for Tenth Amendment Action at the Texas Public Policy Foundation. The paper, “Unity Through Federalism: Repealing Obamacare’s Regulations and Providing an Opt-In for the States,” argues that reversing the state waiver from an opt-out to an opt-in approach is the only chance Congress has to salvage both its credibility and America’s battered healthcare system.

Mr. White recently coauthored a commentary titled “An Obamacare Opt-In: Let Each State Choose”  in National Review with Chip Roy, director of the Center for the Tenth Amendment Action at the Texas Public Policy Foundation.

“Despite seven years of repeated promises, Congress is poised to renege on their commitment to fully repeal Obamacare,” said White. “However, instead of doubling down on the failed premise of centralizing control over healthcare in Washington D.C., the Senate should take the opportunity to liberate patients and providers and unify the American people through federalism. At a minimum, the Senate must eliminate all of the crushing Obamacare regulations as the federal standard, thereby immediately freeing every state to operate in a more market-oriented environment.

“Simultaneously, the Senate should reverse the House bill’s partial, optional opt out waiver into a voluntary opt in to Obamacare’s regulatory regime. This would give states like California and New York the ability to readopt burdensome federal regulations if they desire, while ensuring Texas and other like-minded states retain the ability to pursue a different, freer path for their citizens. The future of American healthcare is at stake. Anything less than this will not only be a broken promise, but a policy disaster taking us one step closer to single-payer, government-run healthcare.”
