AUSTIN –Texas Public Policy Foundation Executive Vice President Dr. Kevin Roberts, TPPF’s Center for Education Freedom Senior Policy Advisor Stephanie Matthews, and Senior Visiting Fellow Peggy Venable issued the following statements today on a proposed amendment to the Texas Constitution that would protect private schools and home schools from state and local regulation. The Senate Joint Resolution was filed today in the Texas Senate by Senator Donald Huffines.

"The Foundation exists to promote liberty—especially for parents and their children—so we love the spirit of this proposal,” said Roberts. “As a home-schooling parent myself, I applaud this idea."

“School choice gives parents the freedom to choose the education best suited to their children,” said Matthews. “Whether that choice is public school, home school, or private school, it should not be overridden by government regulation.”

“As I have traveled the state, I hear from citizens who value their home-school freedom or the ability to select a good private school for their child,” said Venable. “I also hear from parents who don’t have the means to home school or to pay private school tuition and they want school choice. We can and should address both.”
