What would you do with $85,000?

Well if you’re the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), you might spend it on a bike safety rap video.

That’s right, the state’s main transportation agency recently awarded BikeTexas, a nonprofit education group, an $85,000 federal grant to help improve bicycle safety among college students. Out of these funds, BikeTexas spent $6,000 to fly in two out-of-state rappers–The Rhymanese Twins–to help produce a three minute music video titled Safety Bling!

Now I’m not a rapper, so I won’t dare to judge the quality of the video or its ridiculous name (you can do that yourself); but, as taxpayers, it is our duty to call into question the wisdom of such inane spending, which is really just a symptom of a much larger problem-too much government spending.

At the end of the day, there are simply too many other pressing needs (like more and better roads) to spend our State and Federal tax dollars like this.
