Texas Public Policy Foundation’s James Quintero, Director of the Center for Local Governance, testified in support of Senate Bill 1752, a bill to authorize certain municipalities to establish defined contribution plans to provide to retirement benefits to certain employees. Quintero testified before the Texas Senate Committee on State Affairs yesterday afternoon.
“Public pension crises in Dallas and Houston testify further to the fact that defined benefit plans are unworkable and unsustainable,” said Quintero. “For far too long, defined benefit pension plans have been overpromised and underfunded, putting taxpayers and retirees at enormous financial risk. Texans deserve better, which is why it’s time move away from the status quo in favor of something more sustainable, like a defined contribution system.”
