AUSTIN – On Thursday, Aug. 30, beginning at 12:00 p.m., Texas Public Policy Foundation’s Michael Haugen, a policy analyst with the Foundation’s Right on Crime initiative, will provide invited testimony before the House Criminal Jurisprudence Committee regarding pre-trial risk assessment tools.
"In recent years, there has been an increasing amount of attention being brought to bear over Texas' pretrial detention practices and whether the current system is adequately ensuring public safety while respecting our long-standing principle that criminal defendants are considered innocent until they are proven guilty,” said Haugen. “I look forward to discussing these issues with members of the House Criminal Jurisprudence Committee, particularly how validated risk-assessment information can better help judges to determine when dangerous individuals ought to be detained prior to trial, or when low-risk individuals can be safely released."
