AUSTIN – Today, the Texas House gave preliminary approval to Senate Bill 6, which would reform municipal annexation practices. In its current form, this legislation requires consent from a majority of those being annexed in certain areas, streamlines voluntary annexations, and improves the notification process.
“Forced annexation means some Texans have a new city government forced upon them by officials they didn’t elect, to pay off debt they didn’t run up, and to finance services they don’t want or need, all without a vote,” said Bryan Mathew, policy analyst with the Center for Local Governance at the Texas Public Policy Foundation. “With the passage of SB 6, the House took a major step forward to unravel the forced annexation regime and make sure every Texan’s right to vote is protected.”
