The Texas Public Policy Foundation’s Economist Dr. Vance Ginn testified today before the Texas Senate Natural Resources & Economic Development Committee in favor of Senate Bill 1588, relating to the elimination of regular mandatory vehicle safety inspections.

“Mandatory vehicle inspection of basic safety features appears to be a reasonable policy; however, research finds no evidence that safety inspections actually increase driver safety,” said Dr. Ginn. “To comply with research showing Texans waste money to fund unnecessary auto safety inspections, legislators should eliminate these inspections and all associated fees so drivers keep more money in their pocket and remain safe on the road.”

Earlier this year, Dr. Ginn released research on the costs and effectiveness of auto safety inspections, “Costs of Texas’ Passenger Vehicle Safety Inspection.”
