AUSTIN – Last night, the Texas Public Policy Foundation celebrated the graduation of the latest class of its Capitol Leaders Program, a year-long experience promoting the philosophical, policy and professional development of Texas legislative staff early in their careers.

“It is an honor to get to know this group of professionals who have not only committed themselves to public service but are also dedicated to the value of liberty that has helped make our state so great,” said Stephanie Matthews, TPPF’s Vice President of Public Affairs who helped conduct the program.

Addressing the group of more than 20 graduates was Peggy Venable, current appointments director for Gov. Greg Abbott. Venable has a history of both dedicated public service and grassroots advocacy, including serving Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush. Before her selection by Gov. Abbott, Venable was a senior visiting fellow at TPPF.

“I could think of no one more perfect to address this group of leaders early in their careers than Peggy who is a long-time champion for freedom and is now helping the Governor appoint exceptional Texans to many of the state’s leadership roles,” said Dr. Kevin Roberts, TPPF’s Executive Director. “Peggy is a shining example of what it means to be a leader both inside and outside the framework of government.”

The Capitol Leaders Program is conducted once a biennium in between sessions and is open to legislative staff members with one legislative session of experience but less than five years of Capitol work.
