AUSTIN- Today, the Texas House of Representatives passed SB 2420, the App Store Accountability Act. TPPF applauds the work of Senator Angela Paxton and Representative Caroline Fairly on this important piece of legislation. This bill will put parents back in the driver’s seat in the digital age by allowing them to decide what apps are safe for their children to download, and what in-app purchases they are comfortable with them making. It also holds app stores accountable by giving them the responsibility to verify the age of users and to require more transparent, accurate age ratings for apps often rated safe for children that may actually contain lewd, harmful, and unsafe content.

“This is a watershed moment for the movement to protect children online,” said David Dunmoyer, Campaign Director for Better Tech for Tomorrow. “The passage of SB 2420 positions Texas as a national leader in responsible tech policy, and we are encouraged by lawmakers who stood strong and courageously on the side of the nearly 80% of Texas parents who support this commonsense reform.”

“SB 2420 empowers parents with the tools they need to take back control of their kid’s digital experience,” said Greyson Gee, Policy Analyst for Better Tech for Tomorrow. “For too long, Big Tech has set the rules—this bill puts that power back where it belongs: with Texas families.”
