TPPF Applauds Governor Abbott’s Data Center Directives to Protect Texas Ratepayers and Grid Reliability

Texas Public Policy Foundation Supports Actions to Hold Data Centers Accountable to Texas Families While Ensuring Economic Freedom and Growth

AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas Public Policy Foundation (TPPF) today applauded Governor Greg Abbott’s directives to the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUC) and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), calling for the responsible deployment of data centers across the state.

Texas has been a magnet for data center investment because businesses are free to innovate and build here without excessive government involvement, and TPPF recognizes the economic value that responsible development can bring to the state. However, that growth must not come at the expense of Texas residential ratepayers, grid reliability, or the water rights of Texas landowners and communities. Governor Abbott’s directives, if implemented in a balanced manner, will help ensure that the benefits of economic development do not become a burden to everyday Texans.

“Governor Abbott has shown real leadership by protecting Texas families and ratepayers,” said Greg Sindelar, CEO of the Texas Public Policy Foundation. “His directives make clear that economic growth in Texas must strengthen our grid and respect the rights of Texans, not burden them. TPPF commends the Governor for taking decisive action on behalf of the people of Texas.”

TPPF has long championed policies ensuring that the ERCOT grid remains reliable and affordable for all Texans, and that the rights of property and resource owners are protected. The Foundation looks forward to working with Governor Abbott, the Legislature, the PUC, and ERCOT to advance these principles in the upcoming session.
