AUSTIN – The Texas Public Policy Foundation announced today that former five-term state representative Arlene Wohlgemuth will join the Foundation’s permanent staff on January 1, 2010, in the newly created role of executive director.

“Arlene Wohlgemuth is a longtime friend and a respected leader in the public policy community,” said Foundation President Brooke Rollins. “She has a proven record of turning free market and limited government principles into effective policies. Her expertise will be a tremendous help as we begin the next phase of our organization’s growth.”

Wohlgemuth has been affiliated with the Foundation’s Center for Health Care Policy since the fall of 2005-first as a Visiting Research Fellow, more recently as a Senior Fellow. She has produced several research publications on health care policy for the Foundation and is a nationally recognized expert on patient-centered health care solutions.

She currently works with the Foundation to perform research on the consequences from a government takeover of our nation’s health care system, and share her findings with the public and policy makers. “The challenges to liberty today are as great as I have seen at any time during my life,” Wohlgemuth said. “I have realized that I need to be in the trenches with the Foundation, fighting shoulder-to-shoulder for the freedoms we hold dear.”

As executive director, Wohlgemuth will work in the Foundation’s Austin headquarters and oversee all day-to-day operations, while continuing to lead the Foundation’s health care research. She will report directly to Rollins who will continue to serve as chief executive officer.

“The activities of the Texas Public Policy Foundation have grown dramatically over the last several years,” Rollins said. “Supporting those activities requires that we continue to expand our infrastructure in terms of organization and skills sets. The new position of executive director is an important part of our long-term plan as we prepare to move into our permanent home in 2012.”

The Honorable Arlene Wohlgemuth is currently a Senior Fellow at the Texas Public Policy Foundation, a non-profit, free-market research institute based in Austin. She served 10 years in the Texas House of Representatives, specializing in health care issues.
