Non-profit hospitals are supposed to provide a community benefit in order to justify their non-profit status. Most of the time, that includes free or reduced healthcare for low-income patients. But, too many non-profit hospitals aren’t providing much benefit, if any, to their communities even as they spread their tax burden to everyone else in their community.
