AUSTIN – On Wednesday, Aug. 29, Marc Levin, vice president of TPPF’s Right on Crime initiative, will provide invited testimony before a joint hearing of the House Corrections Committee and the House Criminal Jurisprudence Committee regarding the Texas state jail system.
“I look forward to sharing our ideas for overhauling the ineffective and costly state jail system to produce better results for public safety and Texas taxpayers,” said Levin. “We are very pleased that House and Senate committees have made this a priority during the interim and have been meeting with key stakeholders, including probation leaders and district attorneys, to develop a consensus for workable solutions. Given that most individuals sent to state jail are charged with possession of less than a gram of drugs or committed a property offense such as shoplifting stemming from addiction or mental illness, there is broad agreement that we must divert more people from state jail into proven community-based treatment programs that provide both rehabilitation and accountability.”
