AUSTIN – Thomas Lindsay, Ph.D., Texas Public Policy Foundation’s Director of the Center for Higher Education, will testify before House Higher Education Committee in favor of House Bill 1938, the American History Bill, on April 17, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. in room E1.014 at the Texas State Capitol. HB 1938 would clarify the 1955 Texas law requiring that public college and university students complete two courses in American history.

“National studies reveal that American universities falter at civic education, having forgotten Jefferson’s warning that any country expecting to be both ‘ignorant and free’ expects ‘what never was and never will be.’ Happily, Texas, since 1955, has required collegiate courses in American history, however, this requirement is not always followed,” said Lindsay. “HB 1938 corrects through clarifying the 1955 law’s intentions, which are that inclusive, comprehensive surveys of American history be taught to Texas students in order that they become the informed, effective voters and leaders needed to sustain our democracy.”
