The Texas Public Policy Foundation praised the announcement by Governor Greg Abbott that Texas would begin funding the completion of the southern border wall with a “down payment” of $250 million. Since taking office less than five months ago, President Joe Biden has created a security and humanitarian crisis at the border by reversing several successful policies put in place by the previous administration, including the construction of hundreds of miles of new border fencing. Despite that the number of illegal crossings has reached record highs in just the last few months, the Administration has largely ignored the crisis.

“It is a sad fact that Texas is having to do the federal government’s job of protecting American citizens from international human traffickers and drug smugglers, but TPPF appreciates that Governor Abbott is stepping into the breach,” said TPPF’s CEO Kevin Roberts. “The down payment is a good start and Texas should be prepared to do whatever it takes to protect families at the border and across Texas. We look forwarding to hearing more from the Governor on his plan to secure the border and how Texas can continue to lead on this critical issue.”
