AUSTIN – The Texas Public Policy Foundation (TPPF) will host a book discussion with F.H. Buckley, author of The Way Back: Restoring the Idea of America in an Era of Diminishing Expectations TODAY, Thursday, February 11, 2016 at 12:30 pm CST in the Joe B. Hogsett Theater at the Texas Public Policy Foundation.

In 2011 George Will announced that if the Republicans lost the next presidential election “they should get out of the business.” And then they lost the next election. Obama was no longer the 2008 rock star and the economy had tanked, but running on a platform of economic inequality he clobbered his opponent – an asset fund manager. Now it’s 2016. Will there be a repeat?

Income inequality is a false issue, however. We don’t mind unequal outcomes as long as everyone has a fair shot at the prize, if we’re the country of opportunity. The problem is that we’re no longer that. The country of opportunity has spawned an aristocratic New Class, and we’re one of the most immobile countries in the First World. But there’s a Way Back. Reverse all the policies which have made us immobile: bad schools, wasteful higher ed, a crazy immigration system, a regulatory mess and a breakdown in the rule of law.

Frank Buckley is a Foundation Professor at George Mason University School of Law, where he has taught since 1989. Before then, he was a visiting Olin Fellow at the University of Chicago Law School. He has also taught at McGill Law School in Montreal, the Sorbonne (Paris II), and Sciences Po in Paris.
