The Texas State Board of Education (SBOE) is currently rewriting the Social Studies Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), which are the state standards for what students should know and be able to do. TEKS guide what is taught in public schools to over 5 million students.
What should the Social Studies TEKS help children learn and accomplish? The TEKS should educate students to become citizens who are rational and honest, revere the law and God, become dedicated to their family, know the Constitution and the doctrine of Natural Rights, and honor the men and women—the heroes—who devoted themselves to founding our nation and state, and gave the last full measure of devotion to protect and preserve it. Strong Social Studies TEKS have a direct impact on whether we will pass the blessings of liberty on to our children.
We welcome you to a conversation with State Board of Education (SBOE) members Keven Elles and Pat Hardy, state leaders on the Social Studies TEKS update, who will explain the TEKS revision process and how we can collaborate to achieve the goal of helping our students become citizens of our great state.
