Murphy is an experienced criminal litigator who has tried over 80 cases in federal and military courts and has extensive experience working with various state and federal investigative agencies. Prior to his work with Right On Crime, Murphy served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Western District of Virginia where he prosecuted cases involving wire fraud, mail fraud, bank fraud and conspiracies to defraud the federal government. Murphy also prosecuted cases involving drug and weapons trafficking conspiracies, child sexual exploitation, insurance fraud, and emergency/disaster relief fraud.

Prior to serving as federal prosecutor, Murphy spent 20 years as an officer in the United States Army, retiring at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Murphy served in various legal advisor roles over 15 years as a Judge Advocate culminating as a senior advisor to The Judge Advocate General and Deputy Judge Advocate General of the United States Army. While serving as a Special Victim Prosecutor responsible for prosecuting sexual assaults and violent felony offenses, Murphy was recognized as the #1 trial attorney in the United States Army.

Murphy currently serves as Of Counsel with Penn Stuart and Eskridge in Abingdon, Virginia where he is a member of the firm’s Litigation practice group focusing his practice on white-collar criminal defense and government investigations.

A native of Northern Virginia, Murphy, and his family moved to Abingdon in 2020. Whether on the ball fields, spending time on the lake, playing golf, or hiking in beautiful southwest Virginia, Murphy is happiest spending time with his wife, two sons, and Labrador retriever.
