Texas Public Policy Foundation’s Center for Tenth Amendment Action Director Chip Roy issued the following statement on the passage of Article V resolutions by the Arizona and North Dakota state Legislatures. These pieces of legislation request that Congress call a convention of states for proposing amendments to the Constitution, limited to imposing fiscal restraints on the federal government, reducing the power and jurisdiction of the federal government, and establishing term limits for federal officials and members of Congress.
“Washington is broken and it is time for the states to stand up and use the tools given to them by the Founders to restrain the federal government and restore the balance of power back to the states and the people,” said Roy. “One of those tools is the ability for states to propose amendments to the constitution through a convention of states. We applaud the Arizona and North Dakota Legislatures for standing up not only for the people of their states, but also for the rest of America by passing these resolutions calling for such a convention. We encourage other states to follow their lead and look forward to the Texas House acting soon to pass the measure already passed by the Texas Senate so that Texas can become the eleventh state to pass this resolution.”
Similar legislation has passed the Texas Senate and is currently awaiting action by the Texas House. A total of 10 states have passed legislation calling for an Article V Convention of States.
