TPPF Statement on Texas Legislator Letter to U.S. Congress on Repealing Obamacare

AUSTIN – The Texas Public Policy Foundation’s Center for Tenth Amendment Action Director Chip Roy issued the following statement on the letter sent by Texas House and Senate members to the Texas Congressional delegation emphasizing the need to fully repeal Obamacare and the Medicaid expansion in its entirety, and restore to the states the Constitutional responsibility to regulate healthcare. The letter was signed by 65 members of the Texas Conservative Coalition.

          “As healthcare reform is being discussed in Washington, Texas conservatives are united in calling for full repeal of Obamacare and the Medicaid expansion it caused,” said Roy. “Obamacare's onerous mandates and regulations continue to drive up the cost of healthcare for Texas families and any reform that does not remove those regulations cannot be called full repeal. While the Medicaid reforms being discussed in Congress are encouraging, without repealing the expansion to the able-bodied and abandoning the Washington-centric subsidy and regulation scheme underlying Obamacare, those reforms will fail to drive down costs for Texans. It is heartening to see so many Texas leaders in the legislature standing up to ask the Texas Congressional delegation to honor its commitment to free market healthcare reforms and devolution of decision-making to the states.”

In February, TPPF sent a letter to the Texas Congressional delegation outlining key principles for renewing American healthcare. The principles are centered on the full repeal of Obamacare and respect the Constitutional role of the states in regulating healthcare.
