San Antonio – The VIA Metropolitan Transit Board will consider tonight a reduction in fares for San Antonio bus riders as well as other policy recommendations affecting cash reserves and contributions to the city, county and suburban governments for street repairs. The consideration of this measure comes on the heels of a Texas Public Policy Foundation study which found that VIA experienced a 23% loss in ridership since the 1995 fare increase from 40 cents to 75 cents and has excessive cash reserves. The VIA Board is expected to consider a proposal to reduce bus fares for those riders who purchase tickets in bulk. In addition, a measure to reduce the regular 75 cent fare to 60 cents may also be considered.

The VIA Board meeting will take place today at 5:00 p.m. at VIA Headquarters located on 800 West Myrtle in San Antonio.
