AUSTIN – Today, the Texas Senate fully passed Senate Bill 9, a bill to reduce the voter-approval tax rate limit from 3.5% to 2.5%. The proposed change would affect cities and counties of a certain size, and protect Texas taxpayers from large tax hikes not approved by voters.
“Texans overwhelmingly want their property taxes cut—and to stay cut. The legislation approved today by the Texas Senate will slow the growth of property tax bills, unless voters say otherwise,” says TPPF’s James Quintero. “If this bill ultimately becomes law, Texans should expect to see better government, smaller tax hikes, and more opportunity to participate in the tax rate-setting process.”
“SB 9 is a win for every Texas taxpayer tired of seeing their tax bills explode and their tax relief evaporate, said Jose Melendez, Campaign Director for TPPF’s Taxpayer Protection Project. “This is the type of reform that will ensure that tax cuts provided by the Texas Legislature last longer than a New York-minute.”
