AUSTIN — Today, the Texas Public Policy Foundation cheered the Texas State Board of Education’s majority vote to approve “Bluebonnet Learning,” an open education resource (OER) curriculum mandated by House Bill 1605, which directed the Texas Education Agency to create free, statewide resources for Texas schools and teachers.
More than half of Texas K-12 students are not currently reading on grade-level. This will provide Texas public schools with free, online, high-quality instructional materials that align with TEKS so that students can be taught on their grade level.
“The State Board of Education has taken the next big step toward dramatically improving the quality of education in Texas. Parents, students, and teachers should be thrilled to know they will have access to high-quality instructional materials that are guaranteed to be on grade level,” said TPPF CEO Greg Sindelar. “Teachers will be able to spend more of their time doing the critical job of teaching and evaluating students, rather than spending their nights and weekends searching for lesson plans. And parents will get to follow along as their children learn thanks to the online resources that come with the lessons. On behalf of the Texas Public Policy Foundation, I deeply thank and congratulate the SBOE for seeing the lasting benefits of adopting this new curriculum.”
