"The Texas Public Policy Foundation has long understood that sunlight is the best disinfectant for rotten government. Wasteful and unethical spending is much less likely to happen when it can be readily exposed to public scrutiny.

"Until last fall, Texas relied on its governor and 181 state legislators to be the watchdog against wasteful spending. But thanks to the Where the Money Goes website that Comptroller Susan Combs has created, those watchdogs just got 23 million potential reinforcements.

"We are grateful for Sen. John Cornyn's leadership in bringing forward the Federal Spending and Taxpayer Accessibility Act. With House Bill 3430 and Where the Money Goes, Texas has shown that government can be open to the people without detracting from its core functions.

"Spending transparency was a bipartisan issue in Texas, and we trust that members of both parties in Washington, D.C. will work together to make government more transparent to taxpayers."

The Texas Public Policy Foundation is a non-profit, free-market research institute based in Austin.
