In Texas, 57 percent of third grade children read below grade level, 55 percent of our eighth grade children read below grade level, and results are declining. There is a significant body of recent research providing that school boards that focus on student achievement  can improve student outcomes, and that school board members have the power to be transformative in the outcomes of our students.

SB 2201 would require that Texas school boards adopt:

  • Public student outcome goals in reading and math in third and eighth grade, and for career, college, and military readiness, that are aligned with Texas’ new A-F Accountability System objectives to improve reading and math scores for all Texas student groups; and
  • Monitor and report results.
