Austin – Overnight, the Austin City Council voted in favor of an ordinance mandating employers provide paid sick leave to all qualifying employees. The new requirements extend to all employers in the city, with the exception of local government.
“Government-mandated paid sick leave is short-sighted and ultimately counterproductive,” said Bryan Mathew, policy analyst at the Center for Local Governance at the Texas Public Policy Foundation.“The way to help Austin’s working families is to lower the regulations that make it hard for businesses to start, compete and expand in the city, not to pile on new ones.”
“Austin City Council just rushed through a major policy change that will affect all area employers—expect city government—without fully knowing the economic costs or community impact. This is bad policymaking on steroids,” said James Quintero, director of the Center for Local Liberty at the Texas Public Policy Foundation.
