TPPF statement on U.S. Supreme Court Decision in Utility Air Regulatory Group v. EPA

AUSTIN – James Quintero, Director of the Texas Public Policy Foundation’s Center for Local Governance issued this statement today about the U.S. Conference of Mayors:

 

“Earlier today, the U.S. Conference of Mayors began wrapping up its annual meeting in Dallas, Texas, by passing several dubious climate-change resolutions that call for a massive expansion of federal power and authority in the day-to-day affairs of urban residents. Inviting federal intrusion of this magnitude not only constitutes poor public policy but also threatens to undermine a basic tenet of good governance: local control.

 

“The Conference has adopted the liberal stance and solution to the issue of man-made global warming. Forgetting for a moment the serious scientific disputes surrounding climate change, there is little reason to believe that a proper solution entails handing over more control and authority to the federal government when it comes to the lives of urban Texans.

 

“Local control is a cornerstone of good governance. Neither we, nor our elected officials, should so hastily surrender this freedom to a vast federal bureaucracy – particularly when the science is still being debated.”
