AUSTIN, TX – Earlier today, the House Committee on Land and Resource Management was issued an interim charge to “study current annexation policies in Texas.” Texas Public Policy Foundation’s Center for Local Governance Director James Quintero issued the following statement on the interim charge on annexation:

“Under current law, cities can force property owners in the surrounding communities to become city taxpayers without a vote of any kind. Forcibly annexing people without their consent is undemocratic and un-Texan.

“It’s encouraging to see that forced annexation is an issue that has not escaped the attention of the Texas House, and will merit intense scrutiny this interim with an eye toward change in the next session.”
