American students’ literacy and reading comprehension skills are tanking. That’s because of two learning models pushed by left-wing groups.
First is “Balanced Literacy,” which has largely replaced learning to read by associating letters with sounds, or phonics. Students are instructed to essentially guess the meaning of words based on their context.
Perhaps more detrimental than this is the rise of “Critical Literacy,” which says there is no “correct” way to read and respond to a text. Instead, students are taught to analyze literature based on racial, class, and sexual identity, always with the goal of discovering narratives of oppression.
By chasing these educational fads and neglecting literacy, it’s not an exaggeration to say that the public school system has failed to fulfill perhaps its most important function.
