AUSTIN – The Texas Public Policy Foundation today released a paper by Armstrong Center for Energy and the Environment Policy Analyst Leigh Thompson on the facts of hydraulic fracturing, commonly known as fracking, and the impact of local fracking bans, such as the one enacted by the city of Denton. The paper, Fracking Facts: The Science, Economics, and Legal Realities, examines the science, debates, and impact of local fracking bans.

"The scientific evidence used to support fracking bans looks weak when viewed in context,” said Thompson. “When light is shed on the economic and legal facts surrounding fracking bans, the justification for continuing or pursuing them erodes entirely. This is why it’s important to delve deeper than media talking points that push policy based science.

“Emotional appeals and fuzzy facts masquerading as science confound these debates about local fracking bans. The economics, science, and law do not favor proponents of these local bans. The city of Denton has reached into the pockets of every Texan with its fracking ban.”
