AUSTIN – Texas Public Policy Foundation’s (TPPF) Dr. Kevin Roberts, Executive Vice President of TPPF, and Stephanie Matthews, senior policy advisor with the Center for Education Freedom at TPPF, issued the following statements on the Texas Senate passage of Senate Bill 3, relating to the establishment of an education savings account program for Texas.

“The passage of SB3 represents a breakthrough for Texas parents as well as current and future generations of Texas schoolchildren,” said Roberts. “While public schools adequately educate many of our children, as a society, we have an obligation to provide the most appropriate educational opportunities for the most students.

“School choice creates a new path forward for young Texans who may require specialized instruction, unique course offerings, or a different learning environment that they would otherwise be denied without access to education freedom. As I wrote in an op-ed earlier this year, Dr. King reminds us: ‘This is no time for apathy or complacency. This is a time for vigorous and positive action.’”

“Today's vote represents hope for hundreds of thousands of children who prefer a viable option to the one-size-fits-all education system in Texas,” said Matthews. “While we also wish for students in rural communities to have this type of choice, we are grateful that SB3 represents a significant step forward for Texas educational choice.”
