AUSTIN – The school finance trial beginning Monday in Travis County State District Court will have major implications for the education of Texas public school students, according to experts from the Texas Public Policy Foundation.
“Given the number of districts asserting inequities in our current system of funding public schools through local property taxes, this trial could be the end of the line for local school property taxes,” said Talmadge Heflin, Director of TPPF’s Center for Fiscal Policy.
“We are pleased that this school finance trial may shed light on the need to increase the efficiency of Texas’ education system,” said James Golsan, TPPF education policy analyst. “We hope the end result of this process will be greater parental choice, increased access to high quality instruction, and more efficient use of taxpayer dollars.”
Talmadge Heflin is director of the Center for Fiscal Policy at the Texas Public Policy Foundation. Heflin served 11 terms in the Texas House and chaired the Appropriations Committee in 2003, leading the Legislature’s successful efforts to close a $10 billion budget deficit without a tax increase.
