The Texas Public Policy Foundation’s Center for Local Governance Director James Quintero issued the following statement on the announced drafting of Senate Bill 2 (SB 2), The Property Tax Reform & Relief Act of 2017, which is expected to overhaul Texas’ property tax system. SB 2 comes in response to the Texas Senate Select Committee on Property Tax Reform & Relief’s Interim Report to the 85th Legislature, which puts forward several structural property tax reforms recommendations for the upcoming legislative session.
“Texas homeowners and businesses struggle with some of the highest property taxes in the nation, and the problem is getting worse, not better. Texans cannot afford the status quo,” said Quintero. “Change is sorely needed in the coming Session to better protect Texans from the relentless rise in local property taxes. Fortunately, much-needed changes appear to be on the horizon. The Property Tax Reform & Relief Act of 2017 promises to completely overhaul a broken system and put in place a series of safeguards to stop tax bills from growing faster than Texans’ ability to afford them.”
