AUSTIN – The Texas Public Policy Foundation today released a policy brief by Center for Economic Freedom Director Bill Peacock and Research Associate Rachael Lanier on Texas’ electricity market. The brief, Competition is (Still) Working in the Texas Electricity Market, highlights the benefits deregulation has provided Texas electricity consumers since its inception.
“Texas’ decision to make Texas the most competitive electricity market in the United States has reaped great rewards for Texans,” said Peacock. “Residents of our state now enjoy reduced prices and a greater number of plans then they did prior to reform.”
The Texas Legislature formally adopted the competitive retail model in 1999, rolling out the energy-only marketplace over a period of several years. Since the transition period began, ERCOT’s average price per kilowatt hour has fallen from 13.48 cents to 10.44 cents and the amount of available plans has increased significantly.
“All of this success is due to the competitive nature of Texas’ marketplace for electricity,” said Lanier. “Our competitive market offers proof that the Texas Model of free markets and limited government can provide better lives for all Texans.”
