The Texas Public Policy Foundation’s (TPPF) Center for Effective Justice Deputy Director Derek Cohen will testify on civil asset forfeiture in Texas before the Texas Senate Committee on Criminal Justice TODAY, Tuesday, August 23, at 1:30 p.m. CDT in Room E1.016 of the Texas State Capitol.
“Civil asset forfeiture as it currently exists in Texas jeopardizes the most basic elements of due process and rule of law,” said Cohen. “Worse, the current process incentivizes the overuse of forfeiture in questionable situations, allowing forfeited funds to cover pay increases that were not duly considered in the appropriations process. The growing reliance on dubiously-earned forfeiture dollars has also led to a greater reliance on the federal government, with Texas agencies receiving over $60 million in 2015 alone.”
