New Texas Jobs Report Shows Annual Nonfarm Employment Up for the Seventh Consecutive Year

AUSTIN – Today, the Texas Workforce Commission released labor market information in Texas for December 2016. The Texas Public Policy Foundation’s Economist Dr. Vance Ginn issued the following statement:

          “Today’s jobs report shows that the Texas model of relatively low taxes and government spending continues to support positive job creation,” said Dr. Ginn. “Last year there were 210,200 net nonfarm jobs created in Texas, extending the streak of positive annual job creation to a remarkable seven straight years. The unemployment rate of 4.6 percent has now been at or below the U.S. average for a stunning 122 consecutive months. Even during a downturn in job creation by the oil and gas sector, better economic diversification in Texas contributed to last month’s positive job creation being the 73^rd of the last 75 months. Given that limited government policies cultivate investment by job creators, the 85^th Texas Legislature should restrain the size and scope of government to continue this prosperity for all Texans.”
