The meaning of a billionJanuary 02, 2009 @ 12:00 AM

Ever wonder what's in a billion? People seem to throw that word – billion – around so loosely nowadays, but just how big is a billion?

To help us answer that question, the Campaign for Liberty produced a short video with a pretty catchy tune. I'll try not to spoil the whole video, but here’s a few things people will learn:

• A billion seconds ago, it was 1959;
• A billion minutes ago, Jesus was alive; and
• A billion hours ago, humans were still in the Stone Age!

Ok, so a billion is big – but so what? I mean it's not like the word billion is being thrown around recklessly in Washington D.C. by elected officials who were sent there to safeguard the American people and their money...Oh wait, the $700 billion TARP bailout, the $438 billion federal budget deficit for fiscal year 2008, the $408 billion federal budget deficit for the first two months of fiscal year 2009, the incoming administration's $800 billion "stimulus" package...

Heaven help us if D.C. learns about the word "trillion."
